Richard Connor, the only person with any newspaper experience in a four-man team trying to buy the Portland Press Herald, offers a candid look inside how he and his news organizations make decisions. In his column in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader this week, Connor explains that he tried and failed to convince his "editorial board" to support John McCain over Barack Obama. And then he tried and failed again.
But this was not the standard "editorial board," which is primarily made up of people from, well, the editorial side of the newspaper. Rather, as Connor announces proudly, "fewer than half ... were from the editorial department."
In any case, Connor decided not to overrule the majority of the top managers he selected, but rather wrote1400 words explaining his thought process, well beyond the 375 his editorial board took to make their case.
His column is interesting reading, to learn more about him.
