Whether you listen to underground rap or indie pop, everyone loves to
kick it old-school once in a while. Make sure you still remember the
moves to “Thriller,” because Cheap Cologne Thursdays at Redline (59
JFK Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge, 617.491.9851) bring back the
golden days of Michael Jackson. Beginning at 10 p.m., you can dance to
throwbacks from Prince, Paul Simon, the Sugarhill Gang, Marvin Gaye,
Aretha Franklin, and others until 2 a.m., with no cover charge. A stale
stench is okay, but proper attire is required. Guests must be 21-plus. ...

We know: now that the swirl of the presidential election has settled
down a bit, the last thing you want to do is talk politics. Which is
why we have to say thanks to Felt (533 Washington Street,
Boston, 617.350.5555) for offering an alternative way to show our
American pride: drinking and dancing at Republic Fridays. DJ
Rick Rude spins Top 40 hits, mainstream dance music, rock, and pretty
much anything else you can move to. There’s no cover charge for this
21-plus event, and the party runs from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Want to do
your patriotic duty and boost the economy? Buy a drink and propose a
toast — to the Republic, of course.

You’re
a pared-down kind of person: jeans and black pumps are your weekday
wardrobe staples, a stiff vodka martini is your go-to cocktail, and
your handbag contains just the necessities. Sound familiar? Then
something tells us you’ll be all over Simply Thursdays at Gypsy Bar
(116 Boylston Street, Boston, 617.482.7799). Though resident DJ
Influence’s Vegas-style mash-ups of rock, hip-hop, and dance are far
from simple, the event brings Thursday nights back to DJ-dance-drinks
basics and offers a place for the 21-plus crowd to unwind after a long
week (or get wound up for a weekend of long nights). Doors open at 10
p.m., and you can stay until 2 a.m. Mention Stuff@night when arriving before midnight and admission is free; otherwise, the cover charge is $15. It’s that simple....

When was the last time you dressed up as a little devil and went to
church? Tonight from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., dress in whatever costume
suits you and you might be rewarded with a $1000 cash prize at the Boston Ski and Sports Club BeWicked Halloween Ball at Church
(69 Kilmarnock Street, Boston, 617.236.7600). To have a wicked good
time, register early: VIP tickets ($20 for BSSC members; $25 for
non-members) include a cocktail hour beginning at 9:30 p.m. with
complimentary Halloween drinks from event sponsor Svedka Vodka, plus
hors d’oeuvres and VIP line privileges. The event is open to anyone
21-plus with proper ID, but VIP tickets are only available until
October 24 at 3 p.m. by calling 617.789.4070. Non-VIP tickets, if any
remain, will be sold at the door. ...

Stairway to hell For acne-ridden high-school wallflowers, one word was enough to inspire terror: prom. Apparently, the folks at the Coolidge Corner Theatre
(290 Harvard Street, Brookline, 617.734.2500) can commiserate, hence
their decision to devote their annual 12hour frightflick marathon to
the horrors of the annual soirée. The crown jewel in this gory tiara
will be Prom Night, the 1980 classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis. On
October 31 at 11 p.m., undead emcee extraordinaire J. Cannibal and his
busty Black Cat Burlesque girls will kick off the evening with “awkward
prom awesomeness” galore. We’ve got chills already. ...

Tonight, instead of yelling at your TV while watching Jeopardy with a
glass of wine (c’mon: we know we’re not the only ones), grab your
smartest buddies and swing by the Biltmore Bar & Grille (1205 Chestnut Street, Newton, 617.527.2550) for Stump! Trivia at
8 p.m. There’s no cover charge for the Biltmore’s version of
traditional British pub quizzing, and there are prizes — restaurant
gift certificates, ski-lift passes, and even snowboards (the latter two
starting in November) — for the savviest team. We’ll take ìpub fries,
beer, and brainteasersî for 200, please. ...

Bust out your favorite leggings, throw on your neon off-the-shoulder top, and head back to 1984 at Oliver’s (Cask ’n Flagon, 62 Brookline Avenue, Boston, 617.536.4840). This weekly celebration of the Decade of Decadence (and bad hair and fantastically hideous fashion) happens every Saturday night beginning at 10 p.m. and features DJ Paul Foley spinning Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Van Halen, and all the other ’80s songs that we know appear on your iPod’s ìrecently playedî list. Fittingly, Foley spins all vinyl for this revival night. There’s no cover charge, and admission is for the 21-plus crowd only. (Anyone younger than that might not know his Cult Jam from his Culture Club, anyway.)

 Since
gas is so cheap, the economy is in great shape, and jobs are abundant,
we’re sure you’ve got plenty of cash to blow on a night out. Clearly,
we kid. Thankfully, Game On! (82 Lansdowne Street, Boston,
617.351.7001) understands that we want to kick back, listen to live
music, and even hedge our bets on winning a $100 gas card, so they’re
bringing us Recession Sessions every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Enjoy cocktails and $4 appetizers including clam chowder, buffalo
wings, and nachos while local musician Ryan Mara plays acoustic tunes.
As with any recession-worthy event, admission is free. ...

We’ve got to give those hipsters credit: not only do they spend endless amounts of time and money growing facial hair, wearing excruciatingly ironic-yet-fashionable vintage clothing, and traveling on one-speed bikes, they also make time in their busy...

A rosé by any other name is just a lighter red. And we’re not talking about the too-sweet-$6-a-bottle white zinfandel of our underage days, but instead the higher-end (and better-tasting) rosés that have been in full bloom lately. These dry yet mildly...
