Celluloid Androids

A haunting, dystopian saga of future shock, class warfare, robot lust, and sick family mind games, Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent masterpiece Metropolis — the mother of all sci-fi thrillers — stands the test of time. Yet many musicians just can’t resist giving the film’s original soundtrack a fu- turistic makeover. Local avant-electronica group Enuma Elish are the latest to step up to the plate. They’ll be bathing Lang’s exquisite Art Deco visuals with their ethereal soundscape at the Regent Theatre (7 Medford Street, Arlington, 781.646.4849) on November 20 and at the Coolidge Corner Theatre (290 Harvard Street, Brookline, 617.734.2500) on November 21....

Wednesday, November 5 – Sunday, November 16: Boston Jewish Film Festival

What politicians speak about broadly and hesitantly, filmmakers delve into headlong. We’re referring to religion, and now that the interminable election is over, we want some straight talk. Just in time comes the 20th annual Boston Jewish Film Festival, which includes 46 independently􀀐produced films that address all things tribal from an assortment of perspectives. The Gen X filmmakers whose work takes the spotlight at the festival tackle big issues, like the personal effects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, negotiating Jewish identity in our cyber-saturated world, and baseball in the promised land. It kicks off on a humorous note at the Museum of Fine Arts (465 Huntington Avenue, Boston) on November 5 with The Deal, in which William H. Macy, Meg Ryan, and LL Cool J take a multicultural stab at making a movie about the life of former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. In addition to screenings, which mostly happen at the MFA, the Institute of Contemporary Art (100 Northern Avenue, Boston), and the Coolidge Corner Theatre (290 Harvard Street, Brookline), there are panel discussions and opportunities to kibitz with directors. Visit www.bjff.org for additional venues, films, times, and prices.

It’s a long way to tipperary, but not the Boston Irish film festival

When he first launched the Boston Irish Film Festival in 1999, fest director (and ex-Dubliner) Peter Flynn had no idea that his humble screening series would grow into an annual two-week extravaganza boasting a Magners sponsorship (it’s now called the Magners Irish Film Festival), world premieres, and such marquee celebrities as Aidan Quinn and Gabriel Byrne. Flynn gives us the lowdown on this year’s festival, taking place November 13 through 24 (see www.irishfilmfestival.com for details).

Outtake: the Coolidge's 12-hour fright-flick marathon

Stairway to hell

For acne-ridden high-school wallflowers, one word was enough to inspire terror: prom. Apparently, the folks at the Coolidge Corner Theatre (290 Harvard Street, Brookline, 617.734.2500) can commiserate, hence their decision to devote their annual 12hour frightflick marathon to the horrors of the annual soirée. The crown jewel in this gory tiara will be Prom Night, the 1980 classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis. On October 31 at 11 p.m., undead emcee extraordinaire J. Cannibal and his busty Black Cat Burlesque girls will kick off the evening with “awkward prom awesomeness” galore. We’ve got chills already.

Zack And Miri Make A Porno . . . And so do a lot of Bostonians

In his latest film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Kevin Smith takes a break from the View Askewniverse to bring us the story of Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks), two longtime friends and roomies stuck in deadend jobs. After running out of rent money, the pair decide to make a quick buck by creating their own shoestring-budget wank film — only to discover that their platonic relationship might be something much deeper.
