The Big Cover-Up

Concealers that keep even the nastiest bumps under wraps

Any beauty goddess worth her weight in mascara will attest that all make-up must be removed before one’s head hits the pillow. But we’re willing to break the rules for timeBalm ($18) by theBalm. Sold at the Shop at the Sports Club/LA (4 Avery Street, Boston, 617.375.8200), the bees-wax-based formula contains vitamins A, C, and E; soybean oil, which is rich in amino acids; and linoleic acid and phospholipids to help skin with the healing process. Plus, its six shades blend in and cover zits like a pro.

With Double Feature ($24) from LORAC, a sleek tube houses all of your essentials in one convenient place. Twist it apart from the middle to reveal a creamy concealer stick (its matte finish helps hide blemishes, redness, and other undesirables); unscrew the bottom third for an under-eye-brightening, cheek-bone-enhancing, line-diffusing highlighter. A blender ball tops it all off to ensure a flawless finish. Stock up at Sephora (Prudential Center, 800 Boylston Street, Boston, 617.262.4200).

Gotta love a good drugstore solution: toss Physician’s Formula’s Blemish Rx Blemish Healing Concealer ($8.99) in your basket at CVS (various locations) alongside your toilet paper and that jumbo bottle of anti-hangover Excedrin. It’s available in three flesh-colored shades, plus a goblinesque green — weird, yes, but it truly helps counteract redness. And, it’s not just a cover-up; the concealer also contains timerelease salicylic acid that reduces the intensity of existing pimples and, in the long run, keeps blemishes at bay.

Ask any real-estate agent about the key to househunting and you’ll hear “Location, location, location.” When it comes to the ideal makeup job? Foundation, foundation, foundation. Get a head start with Laura Geller’s Spackle Trio ($31.50), available at Sephora; it contains Spackle Under Make-Up Primer, Lip Spackle, and Eye Spackle. The former goes on clear and slightly slippery, drying smooth and giving your base color something to stick to; the latter two work more like traditional concealers, keeping color from bleeding, creasing, and fading. And the fliptop mirror keeps you pretty on the go.

We love it when Target (various locations) carries our favorite brands at lower prices — in this case, cheeky cosmetics guru Napoleon Perdis. Among the line of eye, lip, and face products, we’re drawn to the NP Set Concealer Pen ($22), with its blendable formula, Sharpie aesthetic, and good-for-the-skin infusion of Australian myrtle oil.
