All in the family
Rodney Murillo has worked his way through just about every position, from dishwasher on up, at the original Davio’s, its newer location, and now at Davio’s sister restaurant, Avila, where he’s currently the executive chef. His climb makes one thing clear: family is everything to him. He’s a close friend of owner Steve DiFillippo and the company’s other executive chefs, and he met his wife, Audrey, when she worked at Davio’s 10 years ago. These days, Murillo spends his nights off supporting Boston’s ever-expanding restaurant scene.
@ 6:15 p.m.: On my days off, I’m on the golf course until the afternoon, so by this time I’m usually finishing up and making plans to head to dinner with my wife and some friends.
@ 7:30 p.m.: We’ll probably head to Sage in the South End, where we’ll sit at the bar and get antipasti or a lot of other dishes. I basically like to bar hop with a lot of food involved.
@ 9:45 p.m.: After that, we’ll hit Toro for some cocktails at the bar and to catch up with friends. We’ll get a couple orders of the corn and some Kobe burgers, which are amazing.
@ midnight: If we’re out late, it’s to the North End for dessert. We go to that little Caffé Vittoria for a cappuccino and slice of ricotta pie.
@ 2 a.m.: By now, I’m relaxing on my couch, looking online and doing research for new ideas for my specials the next day.
